Setting the Tone (1.6.2020)
I’ll be honest from the start and tell y’all that I did not take this photo THIS year, but I found it firmly fitting to start things off with a reflection of word and art (not to be confused with word art).
Through the years, photography has provided the world with many words of wisdom about life and the art itself. Personally, I have jumped around from time to time with which quote sides most to my preference and persona.
After many years... I think I’ve settled on this one from none other than Walt, himself. In fact, I enjoy this quote so much that the photo above is a still of the wall decal that displays in Luner Imaging headquarters. More specifically, these words are some of the last things I see each day before turning in.
As always, in practicing Visio Divina, I am filled with an immense amount of inspiration. As a photographer and creator, I have many examples of inspiration, both living and dead, and I am blessed to have the means and opportunities to create in a variety of mediums and formats.
As the new year and decade begin, I plan to offer prayers to artists near and far especially those that may be struggling to find their vision, self-confidence or identity as a creator. May the Lord guide them to find these components of their work. I also am going to put forth my gratitude for the many that have enabled my growth and success to date, whether they previously or continuously provide me with feedback, praise, and opportunity.
At the beginning of 2019, I reposted a tweet that read, “I will take more pics in 2019.” I did that. In 2020, I aim similarly, but to more so “take more strategic pics.” In alignment with my studies with Purdue University Global, the strategy is a missing piece of many communicator’s vocabulary and mission. And I’d guess that Walt had a strategy in mind when defining pictures as “the most universally understood.” More than the spoken language, more than the written word.
And as you have read (not seen), the words did a lot more for me when they were transformed into a piece of art.
